What is a Parent Cooperative Preschool?
A Parent Cooperative is a nonprofit preschool that is dependent on the community for support and run by parents who volunteer their time and energy in order to ensure the educational success of our children. With parents at the helm, our first priority is to create an environment where our children will thrive while preparing for their future and enjoying a safe and nurturing environment. We are governed by a board of directors comprised of parents, teachers, and the director. As a member of our school you have the opportunity to be involved at every level of your child’s foundational education!
When you enroll at MCP, you become a member of the Not-for-Profit Corporation that governs the school. This is comprised of parents serving staggered 1 year terms. The board oversees all operations of the school, including committees, fundraising, and day to day operations and personnel. The board works closely with the staff, ensuring a positive preschool experience. Parents may opt to serve on the board of directors instead of serving on a committee for a discount in tuition. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our monthly board meetings and let your voice be heard! They are generally held the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm at the preschool. Dates for the meetings will be posted in our Google calendar and linked on this website.
Parents participate on one of four committees.
Ways and Means is our largest committee. As a not for profit organization, fundraising helps the preschool meet operating expenses and provides additional income for improvements to the school. This committee is dynamic; members plan our annual auction, as well as several other smaller fundraisers. This is a great choice for first time parents as you can get to know other families at monthly meetings and have a night out without children!
Special Events: This group plans social nights at local businesses each month, giving our families opportunity to meet other parents and enjoy an evening out. They also organize our end of the year family picnic and monthly restaurant fundraisers.
Communications: Coordinating community events is just one facet of this committee. These members distribute information about the preschool to the community at large via our monthly newsletter and brochure/publicity pamphlets. This position appeals to the most creative members of the group!
Repair/Housekeeping and Cleanup: Calling all handy parents, this committee is for you! In addition to helping with laundry, repairs and other tasks, this group supervises deep cleaning of the preschool several times a year.
Parents or guardians of MCP students have the opportunity to assist in the classroom on a rotating schedule. All parents take turns providing snacks (from our peanut free snack list) for the children. If you opt to help in the classroom please arrive at the school 5-10 minutes before class begins to help with set-up/preparation for the day’s activities. Parents assist with projects and the children throughout the day and enjoy watching the children be in their element. You student gets to have the special responsibility of being the "Snack Helper" of the day. This entitles them to ring the clean up bell, pick out a story, and draw a memory for our calendar. It is a huge honor and the children glow with pride when it is their turn! At the conclusion of class the parent assists with cleaning up the classroom. Parent aiding is not required but encouraged (and incredibly fun!).
